Toxic Waste: Testimony

A businessman made millions with toxic waste illegally buried near Naples until the Camorra began to persecute him and he had to abandon the business. This activity led to an increase in cancer in the Neapolitan region.

The experience from other countries should teach us to do things correctly. If you have hazardous waste TWM can help you find a solution for its proper handling and final disposal.

In case of any doubts on how to separate waste in your home, this short video from the Ministry of Environment will explain it to you:

How is solid waste classified? Some are reusable some are not. Watch the video and share it.

Towards a Solution to Used Tires in Colombia

Even when a legislation that regulates the handling of used tires already exists, the problem with this waste in different cities of Colombia has been visually clear. While Resolution 1457 of 2010 of the Ministry of the Environment establishes requirements for tire producers to implement selective collection systems and management of used tires, Resolution 6981 of 2011 of the Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Mobility of Bogota encourages the use of rubber grain in the asphalt applied to constructions in the capital district. However, these initiatives have not managed to create the demand necessary for tire collection or sufficient continence from users in order to avoid that they end up in the public spaces of our cities.

Recently the government created a three main purpose action plan. First: to increase the percentage of retreated tires, which currently is 23%, and which would be lengthening the useful life of the tires. Second: Increase demand for recycled rubber grain for asphalt mixtures for national, 4G and urban roads. Third: Raising consumer awareness of the importance of good tire use, post-consumption programs and alternative use.

While a resolution is prepared by the Ministry of the Environment, in the new measures to manage used tires within the country, the government has announced initiatives to incentivize the use of recycled rubber grain for asphalt mixtures in tender proposals for the construction of the primary and secondary network, by means of which 100 points will be given to the bidders that include this material. It is also evaluating the use of rubber for energy use in industrial boilers and thermal power plants.

It is hoped that with these steps the demand for recycling of used tires is increased within the country and thus create a sustainable system for tire management in which the life cycle of these within Colombia is more controlled.

How do I perform maintenance to my septic tank?

Tips mantenimiento - limpieza pozo séptico

Due to the industrial processes performed by companies, the septic tanks that store all liquid waste of said processes collapse. This results in bad odors at the tank’s location and plagues and unwanted animals that will affect both the image of the company and the process that takes place there. For these reasons, it is recommended that maintenance be performed to the plumbing system twice a year with a vactor truck. The vactor truck has a powerful pump that manages to suck water and sludge taking it to a tank in the back of the truck where it is subsequently transported directly to an environmentally licensed treatment plant where its final disposal will be conducted under all the applicable regulations.

Below you can see 5 key tips to maintain a septic tank in optimal conditions.

1.Installation

The septic tank’s design and its appropriate installation is vital in order to avoid future inconveniences. We recommend that a company specialized in this type of work be hired, since they will also verify the conditions of the soil and the environment in order for the septic tank to not cause any problems.

2. Unwanted Waste

Never throw extraneous items into the septic system, large solid waste (disposable, garbage, soil, among others). It will clog the tanks in a shorter time and its performance will generate problems and will need a greater frequency of maintenance.

3.  Resistant Cover

In order to maintain secure access and avoid objects and/or people falling into the well, it is advisable to have a resistant cover and, if possible, for it to be marked for its easy location.

4. Avoid starting a fire near the tank

The gases produced in the tank can cause explosions. In order for this not to happen, it is recommended that no objects or cigarettes be lit near the tank when it is uncovered.

5. Never enter the tank

To enter a septic tank, it is necessary to have training under Decree 1223/2014 and provision of adequate personal protection elements (PPE). Otherwise, it could have unfortunate consequences for the life of the person who tries to enter, and also for the company with very high fines.

In the event of any doubts in order to perform maintenance to a septic tank or the need to lease a vactor, TWM has the availability of trained personnel that will resolve any question, contact us.

What Should I Do With Used Cooking Oil?

Source: Wikipedia

In Colombia, we are used to disposing of our cooking oil by pouring it down the drain or by throwing it in the garbage.

According to an article published in RCN RADION in 2015, quoting the Colombian Association of the Edible Fats and Oils Industry (Asograsas), the country reached a total production of 804,478 tons of oil, from which 539,815 were pure and mixed refined oils, followed by margarines with a production of 209,702 tons and 54,961 tons of hydrogenated fats and shortenings.

Recycling of solid waste is common throughout the world. But can cooking oil be recycled? According to the national government, most Colombians are not aware of the proper ways to dispose of cooking oil in order not to generate environmental pollution. (Learn more: Solid Service Management)

“It is a bad habit to pour cooking oil down the drain because it reaches the sewer system and does not allow the wastewater treatment process to be adequate. The most serious issue is when this oil goes to the rivers because it removes oxygen from the water causing serious damage to the life of the ecosystems” as explained by Carlos Jairo Ramirez, director of the Sustainability group of the productive system of the Ministry of the Environment.

According to the radio source, there are initiatives in several cities of the country, especially in Cali and Bogota, that regardless of the limitation of reception sites, tons of this liquid are collected per year for it to later become biodiesel. In the capital, there are about 30 collection points distributed in several areas, one of the pioneers was the Palatino shopping center where more than 200 liters can be collected.

In TWM we have strategic allies which comply with the regulation established by the Ministry of the Environment for the storage, transportation and disposal of this type of waste.
